Differences between the first & second model Square card reader include the size. The new one is slightly larger in diameter, but slimmer & has curved edges. Plus the Square logo is stamped only on one side, where the card should be facing when swiped. The other side (pictured) is the side the magnetic strip should be facing when swiped.

The original Square device (on the left) has been modified to accept multiple swipe speeds as well as cut out the interference it was causing with the iPhone 4. You can see the new device (on the right) has plastic between the antennae and the device. This permits transmission of the card data, whereas you needed a piece of paper in place between the older card reader and iPhone 4 before this new release.
